In the last 5 years, we’ve seen multiple customer data breaches happen right under our noses. This has resulted in industry leaders sitting down and rethinking how to make payments through any digital network safer. With new emerging mobile payment technologies, we are, in fact safer from hackers and attacks. However, many areas are still gray and as a result, can still sometimes get the average consumer into a position they don’t want to be in like, identity fraud and theft. Here are some ways to stay even safer when shopping this holiday season. As a side note, please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

  1. Always look for “https” in your address bar, especially when on a page where you must enter any payment information:What does this mean?

HTTPS or Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol is a method for communicating securely over a computer network. This particular protocol is mostly used on the worldwide web and protects you from “man-in-the-middle” attacks that can often result in compromised payment information.

  1. Use browser features to increase security:

Google Chrome and other browsers offer a way to save your payment information in the “autofill” section. This is actually a safe and easy way to prevent manually typing in payment info over and over again. Autofill is best used on a personal computer that only you use.

Try to use one card to deter any potential theft:

Many security professionals suggests sticking to one payment type when shopping online to minimize unforeseen activity on your credit card or bank account. Another alternative is to use a one-time-use card with a predefined monetary value attached to it.

  1. Use Apple Pay / Android Pay / Samsung payment technologies:

Apple and Android Pay are mobile payment services that allow you to store information from your credit and debit cards. Owners of most Android phones and Apple’s iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus, Apple Watch-compatible devices (iPhone 5 and later models), iPad Air 2, iPad Pro and iPad Mini 3 and 4 can all utilize this service for secure purchasing in-store and in loads of apps.  Mobile wallets allow you to also store additional information like plane tickets and even customer care cards for places like Walgreens and CVS pharmacy.

Apple Pay and Android Pay are extremely handy when you don’t have cash on hand. And because you most likely have your phone nearby(or in your hand) digital wallets are just as useful as your regular wallet. Apple and Android Biometric fingerprint make payments even safer. From what I can see, we’re in the beginning phases of living in a future with no physical wallets.

  1. Get your receipt!

This is a critical last piece of the online shopping process. You should receive a confirmation in your email inbox of some sorts that your order has been placed, shipped, or is currently being processed. Don’t worry if the email doesn’t come instantly, but be on the lookout for some information from the company or medium/marketplace you purchased from.
