10 years ago, I was attending the funeral of the late Pastor B. J. Maxon, a long-time loyal Lott Carey pastor, in New Orleans. Prior to attending the funeral, I was fixated on the weather coverage of hurricane Katrina in the Gulf of Mexico. Not having grown up around storms like that, I was – well – concerned. I was also determined to get on the first plane leaving New Orleans following the funeral. I was successful. The story for so many people in the city, state, and region, however, was very different.
In previous years, Lott Carey had come along side partners around the world to support their recovery efforts in places like Haiti, Jamaica, Grenada, Guyana, Mozambique, and Somalia. Our global experience had taught us some things about what people might need in the United States if they were going to rise from devastation. The huge storm was bad enough. Human contributions – like levee failures and the bungled responses of governmental leaders – made a natural disaster an enormous tragedy.
Lott Carey supporting partners were generous, and our implementing partners in the region were effective. Our network was faithful – and fruitful. We are still working in partnership in the region and around the world.
Lott Carey’s Disaster Response Network has matured through the past decade to serve across North America. Through the years, we have responded in the Gulf Coast, the Eastern Seaboard, and the Southwest. We have launched a new partnership with the American Red Cross to help churches support vulnerable communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. We have chosen to engage and mobilize while, simultaneously, advocating for justice in the ways that disaster services communities interface vulnerable, especially poor and minority, communities.
During this season of remembrance, we invite you to share Lott Carey’s journey of ministry through the following magazines and videos. Because we are resurrection people, we are committed to “helping people rise again.”
