#WhereIsBeauty is definitely talking about how people perceive beauty for themselves.”

According to first-time filmmaker Angela McCrae, #WhereIsBeauty targets multi-cultural millennial women grappling with issues of self-identity, the definition of beauty and the pressure of society’s standards. “When I was first given the script I connected with it immediately,” says McCrae. “I felt like it was a great opportunity to reach millennial women.”

According to McCrae, who spoke exclusively with Reel Urban News, #WhereIsBeauty chronicles the challenges of “Nina,” a young Los Angeles-based artist. “The film is about her path and her journey throughout the day to find inspiration for this chapter, not only in her life but in her art as it comes to defining beauty.”

#WhereIsBeauty stars R&B singer song-writer, Goapele. Angela White serves as producer of #WhereIsBeauty.

Throughout the compelling #WhereIsBeauty story, McCrae depicts the impact of social media and society on women as they struggle to find an acceptable level of beauty. “As women we get caught up in the world and society’s standards of beauty. It’s very stressful.

“It’s very much an issue a lot of women from various backgrounds and ages deal with. And because of the advent of social media, Instagram and Snapchat, these young girls feel their image is very much a priority as it’s getting shared on a whole other level than when I was growing up.”

As we observed on the #WhereIsBeauty set, McCrae is not your typical movie director. She is driven by a mission and a purpose. “I’m reaching women of color, specifically black women. When it come to beauty and defining their standard of beauty for themselves, I think it can be challenging for black women. We all have different hair textures, different lengths, we have different complexions and we have different features. I think one of the beautiful things about women of color is that the spectrum is so wide. We don’t fit into one box. Our beauty is not just condensed into blue-eyed, brown-eyed, blond, brunette or slim and heavy-set.”

McCrae is optimistic that #WhereIsBeauty will resonate with women of color. The film, aimed at millennials, is being shot in black and white. “I think one of the good things about millennials is that they try to remain true. I think a lot of individualism happens in this young generation.”
