BLACKS & REALITY TV Pt. 2

For years, African Americans have fought to be in the forefront of society; to be seen in a positive light; and change the negative stereotypes surrounding the black community. But, if one were to watch shows like “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta” and “Basketball Wives,” they would call the latter notion a blatant lie. The women of these shows show no integrity in uplifting the image of the modern day black woman. Though it is unfair, society uses these shows to paint a degrading picture of the general Black populous.

Indeed, it is true to the core that drama attracts ratings. However, Black women are ignorant to the fact that they are being used as nothing more than a puppet to bring in millions of dollars to major networks and sponsors while it s alleged members of the cast settle for “70,000 dollars,” if that. It is highly unlikely that one episode can be found where the ladies are not throwing bottles or even worse, taking physical jabs at one another. It says a lot about one’s character when they choose fame and fortune over integrity and self-worth.
It is evident that, in some regards, Black women in reality television have made a mockery of the Black race. Because drama brings ratings and ratings sell, these shows are not going anywhere. However, people must always stay mindful to the fact that the entire African American populous cannot be grouped with the indignant behavior presented on these shows.

We now live in a generation where people take pride in being degraded nationally, and where the hard work of those who came before us can be trampled over like tissue paper. The talentless stars of these reality shows make it hard for talented, hardworking Blacks to make a name for themselves in entertainment. They are quick to jump for the fame and not hard-work. The African-American image is stagnant. The hard works of the few are constantly being diminished by the dull majority.
