Reel Urban Politics:

Cynthia Shaffer, Political Editor for Reel Urban News, recently spoke with several self identified Republicans from around the nation. Shaffer posed the question: What do Republicans mean when they say, “We’re going to take our country back.”

According to Shaffer, “I only asked that one question. Their sentiment was remarkably similar, yet their perspective was entirely unique.”

First Response:

Erieka Paige-Dangeau, lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and daughter. Erieka is a registered republican.

“I never saw this as racial. I always thought that was a stretch. Taking our country back is speaking of the state of our economy. We’ve had more than two straight quarters where the GDP has been below 3% which is considered a recession. We have never been able to maintain above 3%. Also, for the first time in US history we dropped our credit rating below A+. Taking our country back means we need to return to a prosperous nation and the land of opportunity, where hard work and diligence wins and not rebuke. We did build that!”

Shaffer asked Paige-Dangeau if she would be willing to elaborate on her first statement since Shaffer didn’t mention or ask anything about race in the question. Paige-Dangeau replied, “You didn’t ask, but every liberal I’ve heard quote, ‘take our country back’ has always said that its hidden meaning is to take us back to slavery or to a time where Blacks didn’t have civil rights.”
