The rapper covers the November issue of Marie Claire magazine, and in the monthly she is not holding back on her thoughts about the way black women are treated in Hollywood, in both the rap world and the media. But instead of just voicing opinions, Nicki is backing up her concerns with concrete examples and facts.
The 33-year-old zeroed in on an issue with Kanye’s 2005 hit “Gold Digger” and used the lyrics to explain the problem she sees with the portrayal of black men’s relationships with black women.
“I’m so tired of black women feeling that when our men get rich, they’re going to leave them for a woman of a different race,” Nicki shared with the magazine. “It wasn’t funny when Kanye said [in his 2005 hit ‘Gold Digger’], ‘When he get on, he’ll leave your a– for a white girl’ — and Kanye happens to be with a white girl now. It wasn’t funny when he said it; it was the f—— truth.”
And also on the subject of Kanye West’s wife, Nicki spoke about the double standards women of color face in the media. The rapper offered another specific example of the bias to Marie Claire, saying, “When Kim Kardashian’s naked picture came out, [Sharon Osbourne] praised it, and my fans attacked her for being such a hypocrite. So it wasn’t trashy and raunchy when a white woman did it, but it was when a black woman did it?”
After Nicki’s “Anaconda” single art was released — which featured the rapper in a sports bra and G-string — Sharon famously went on “The Talk” and likened the photo to a “cheap porno cover of a DVD.” But when Kim Kardashian West posted a naked selfie on Instagram Sharon applauded the reality star, called the photo “inspiring,” and even went so far as to emulate the photo herself on social media.
“It’s quite pathetic and sad, but that is my reality, and I’ve gotten accustomed to just shutting it down,” Nicki reflected.
The rapper also touched on problems she sees all women, not just black women, struggling with — having the wrong type of goals.
“Nowadays, I feel like [young women] see marrying into money — I think that’s a big thing now. I don’t want that to be a woman’s goal in life,” Nicki explained, before offering some sage advice for what women should be striving towards. “I want your goal in life to be to become an entrepreneur, a rich woman, a career-driven woman. You have to be able to know that you need no man on this planet at all, period, and he should feel that, because when a man feels that you need him, he acts differently.”
