Rev. Michael J. Fisher, Pastor of Greater Zion Church Family, which is located in the heart of Compton, California and steps away from the new Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital, expressed his optimism about the success of the new medical center. “The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital is so important and vital to the mental stability and culture of Compton, Watts and South L.A. It’s good to have the hospital back and I think it’s going to help with the moral of the city.”

Fisher, who leads a young urban progressive church has witnessed first hand the hardship in Compton without having a first class medical center in one of South Los Angeles most dangerous neighborhoods. “Watts, Compton and South L.A. have suffered immensely by not having a hospital. Without this hospital people have had to travel great lengths to receive medical attention and sometime it didn’t work out for the best.”

Flanked by a group of young African American mentees, Fisher noted the new King Hospital is not a Los Angeles County facility. “King may not be completely public like it once was, but still there are some people that otherwise would never get medical attention, they can receive it now.”

Although Fisher is positive about the new King Hospital, he was direct in relationship to the future of the medical center.  “The hope that I have for this hospital and community is that it remains integral and that it’s about the people and not politically driven or money hungry.”
