The struggle of the races has again boiled to a head in Baltimore. Much of the black community perceives it to be open season on black Americans, males being the specific target. Never mind that whites may die at the hands of law enforcement in larger numbers than blacks.

But those who are more genuine in their protest would say law enforcement killing whites only exaggerates the point that we need overhauling reform of law enforcement protocol. Especially when there is disparate impact on minority peoples, as evidenced in the incarceration rates. Even if this claim is granted veracity, the question remains, What could or should be done? And more importantly, who will make these decisions?

Will it be the rioters who help to make these decisions? How will they be able to make these choices when inner city voting rates are the lowest around? Do they not have opportunity to impact law enforcement through their vote? If this opportunity is not taken, how then will they bring about the proper change through civil unrest and violence? If they will not push for change when heads are level, how then will they bring correction when emotions are high?

The protesters call for justice, change and reform. But how exactly are these terms defined? And in what moral code are they grounded? These questions bring me to my over arching point, revolution not grounded in moral absolutes can only bring anarchy. Protest with no morality will lead to violence and misplaced outbreaks on those who have nothing to do with the problem. Unrest with ambiguous ethics will allow the unscrupulous to be named among the genuine.

On these grounds are where I break with the protesters. The ends have become so important any means are justified. Never mind the obvious logical hurdle one must jump to justify immorality to bring about moral ends. Unless your moral compass points true north your journey for justice is off course.

Furthermore, I know of no moral foundation to bring about lasting change than the foundation laid by the man Jesus Christ. His influence can be seen in the substantial movements of Ghandi, King, and yes the American Revolution. His movement started under the oppressive boot of imperial Rome. It would eventually grow so large as to change the political and religious make up of all Rome. Christ’s influence can be seen in the research of Robert Woodberry who details equality and freedom throughout the world has followed the movement of Christian missionaries. More government and more education is our answer for all our social and political ills. However, throughout history both these institutions have failed us. Here I identify with the words of Billy Ghaham, “outside of Jesus Christ, I know of no other hope for mankind.”
