(Mount Vernon, NY) –American Legacy announced today that as it prepares to launch American LegacyXL, a streaming video service in February 2016, it is currently streaming free of charge Proudly We Served narrated by Ossie Davis. The documentary film focuses on the men of the USS Mason, the Destroyer Escort during World War II manned by African-Americans. In addition to historical and classic movies, subscribers to American LegacyXL will have access to original televisionprograms based on American Legacy magazine’s content, access to American Legacy’s digital archives for back issues and research purposes and will receive American Legacy’s monthly E-Newsletter.American LegacyXL will also produce original history oriented programming geared to Millennials.
In making the announcement Rodney J. Reynolds AmericanLegacy’s founder, stated “This is a thrilling true story of the USS Mason (DE 529) and its crew, the only African-American sailors to take a U.S. Navy warship into battle during World War II. They challenged the segregation of the U.S. Military, fought the Nazi U-Boats, and won.” In addition to the movie viewers will be able to read and download the original article that appeared in American Legacy’s Spring 1996 issue! “Proudly We Served is an example of the type of programming that will be available on American LegacyXL when it launches in 2016 said Reynolds.”
American Legacy Magazine was founded in 1995 as a joint venture between Reynolds’ RJR Communications, Inc and ForbesMagazine. RJR Communications assumed full ownership of the magazine and all related assets of the joint venture in January 2009. Total readership of American Legacy was over 2 million when the print edition went on hiatus in 2011. The company launched an E-Newsletter in April 2013 and its mobile truck exhibit has continued to visit school districts, African-American festivals and colleges and universities across the country since 2008. In addition, the company sells black history curriculum products to the K-12 school market.
