“Exhaustion! Pushing yourself to the limit. We’ve been out here for about three weeks now – making it on top of this hill is just a killer – almost dead. Can’t even move. Limping when you’re walking – but that’s how you know you’re pushing yourself.”

The training camp perspective Joey provides clearly indicates he’s been in training most his life. “When you’re pushing your body to the limit and you got your coach yelling at you, roaring at you – you just know that you’re doing something. Thank God for waking us up today and that we got to push our bodies to the limit.”

Davis, a Compton native reflected on the impact of COVID-19 on his life. “Money! Coming from a city like Compton doing the best you can every day a lot of people don’t have the resources or the men and coaches in their corners.”

“Black Ice” was joined in training camp with two of his Team Body Shop mates, AJ “Mercenary” McKee and Kevin “Baby Slice” Ferguson. All three MMA fighters are signed to Bellator and on the fight card for the Thursday November 19 fight.

“That’s everything when you can look at somebody and see they’re doing the same thing you’re doing pushing themselves to exhaustion is just encouraging. That’s a big stepping stone to being an athlete.”

“I wanted people to know dreams do come true out of Compton and one of my dreams came true with my book. The book is just a bonus to my career.” Joey “Black Ice” Davis

Undefeated is only one of many adjectives that can be used to describe the record-setting life of Joel Malcolm Davis, the author of the 2019 released memoir, From Compton to Cleveland: Champions Don’t Follow Destiny … They Create It.

“Coming out with my book, I just wanted to let people know I am from Compton. I wanted to let people know there are successful people out of Compton. I wanted people to know dreams do come true out of Compton and one of my dreams came true with my book. The book is just a bonus to my career.”

In the final moments of our profile with Joey Davis, who spoke exclusively with Michael Reel of Reel Urban News, Davis provided a glimpse of who he is and who he has become. “I have two sides to me,” Davis told Reel. “I’ve got the ‘Black Ice’ side then I have the Joel side. ‘Black Ice’ is very dynamic and wants to be the best he can be.”

Mild-mannered outside of the cage, Davis, who has a 7-0 professional MMA record, is all business once inside the cage. “A lot of people don’t know, I switch the script real quick. I want to be the best human being on the planet but in the cage, I want to be the grittiest mother—— you probably will ever meet!”
