In his first formal interview since Clippers owner Donald Sterling unleashed his recorded racist rant, Leon Jenkins, former head of the NAACP’s L.A. branch, sat down with Michael Reel of ReelUrbanNews.com to set things straight.

“When I first heard it,” Jenkins said, “there was no question in my mind the statements were indefensible, they were reprehensible and it did not appear to be statements that I thought reflect what America is about.”

Jenkins told Reel that he contacted Sterling, a friend for 10 years, after hearing his inflammatory statements about Black people. “I called Sterling up and asked him at the time what did he mean, what were the circumstances of the recording and was there anything else out there and we should talk about this.”
