Congratulations are in order for Regina King, who took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk.
It’s King’s first Golden Globe win, having also been nominated for her role in Netflix’s Seven Seconds and her turn in American Crime.
During her speech — in which she thanked director Barry Jenkins, the cast of Beale Street, and her son — King also made a pledge to hire more women on projects she produces and gave a shout out to Time’s Up.
“So often everyone out there, they hear us on the red carpet…and they say celebrities, we’re using the time to talk about ourselves when we’re on our soap box, and using a moment to talk about the systemic things that are going on in life,” she began.
“The reason why we do this is because we understand that our microphones are big and we’re speaking for everyone,” King added, “I’m going to use my platform right now to say, in the next two years, everything that I produce I am making a vow — and it’s going to be tough — to make sure that everything that I produce…is 50 percent women.”
“I challenge…anyone out there who is in a position of power — not just in our industry, in all industries— I challenge you to challenge yourself and stand with us.”
King’s acceptance speech was met with a resounding applause and even a standing ovation by some.
