SOMETHING FOR SUNDAY

By Rev. Gerald Adams

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8 ESV

This is no weekend war that we’ll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels. Ephesians 6:12 MSG

“There seems to be a concerted effort in the USA to return to pre-civil rights America.” Rev. Gerald Adams, Reel Urban News

When the news broke that SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) had ruled against Affirmative Action in Higher Education admissions, I immediately thought, here we go again.  There seems to be a concerted effort in the USA to return to pre-civil rights America. We must be watchful in this life-or-death fight.

We were taught in the segregated south that it was not enough for Black people to be as good, we had to be better.  Not enough for us to be the same as WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants), we had to be better then.

We don’t have to fact check; it is common knowledge that the USA is a racist society. Try as we might to live above it, racism is very much with us and keeps rearing its ugly head in all walks of our daily lives, So the highest court in the land, removes what had been an attempt to level the playing field by removing the well-established tool of Affirmative Action in school admissions. We are forced again to look for a how-to plan to assure that people of color will be able to go to “the better colleges”.

Are quota systems the answer?  Those who argue against Affirmative Action will use their same arguments against quotas. Though debated, the testing tools used for college admissions tend to promote an educated elite. Some school districts have stopped educating and are only teaching information that will allow students to pass standardize test. What kind of web are we weaving?

“I smiled to myself and thought, could the court be playing this card to keep itself from being examined and held to higher ethical and moral standards.” Rev. Gerald Adams, Reel Urban News

We can’t walk away and pretend that there is no problem.  Feminists have insisted on Affirmative Action in the workplace and forced their acceptance. It is a mess.  We must be sober minded as we confront wickedness in high places.  I smiled to myself and thought, could the court be playing this card to keep itself from being examined and held to higher ethical and moral standards. Just being watchful.

Let us keep up the press for equality at all levels standing for and insisting on doing what is right.
