Something For Sunday

By Robert Jones

Matthew 4:16 The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, and those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, upon them a Light dawned.

Here we read of the promised light that was to come to the coastal lands of Israel. These were some of the furthest points away from the temple. As such, they were considered to be in darkness because the devout practice of Jewish religious life was not as strict there. It was in these areas where the light of Jesus’ ministry would shine bright.

We need light to see. In a place where there is no light, everyone is blind. The dawning of Jesus’ birth reminds us that we were spiritually without light and blind. Doomed to grope around for a way to please God, which ultimately fails. Jesus, our light, gives sight to our souls and lights a path for our reunion with God.

In this advent season let’s remember to be a light to the darkness we encounter. It is so easy to give in to the negativity and cynicism that is pushed by a society and news cycle that cares only for the revenue that can be generated from our attention.

Let’s pay attention to the people and places around us that are far outside the positions of power and influence. Let’s pay attention to the margins and the beautiful souls that often fall outside of them.

Recent years have reminded us of how much we need each other. Forced isolation has shown us that if we don’t meet corporately, we fall apart individually.

Fortunately, most of us now regather and regularly fellowship with friends and family. Unfortunately, there are so many still isolated not by sickness but instead by circumstance. Let’s pay attention to the dark corners around us and shine a light to those who need it.

All ye saints of light proclaim, Jesus, the Light of the world; Life and mercy in His name, Jesus, the Light of the world….
